McLuhan tells the story of peasants in a small village who were shown
an 8 mm. film on the prevention
of malaria. It described, for instance, how to remove standing rainwater
to discourage mosquitoes from collecting.
Afterward, in a discussion of the film, it was found that the villagers
failed to discern anything but moving black and white lights.
They didn't know that we read a film by focusing about 4" in front
of the screen and the western health volunteers didn't know to teach
them.
One viewer did recall seeing a chicken moving in the lower, right-hand
corner. And so I wonder what is it I'm not seeing?" |
