I paint these abstract paintings to gain an understanding of how color relates to the shape of the canvas itself and how they can become an integrated whole. I layer flat fields of color to intuitively discover a painted structure that expresses the actual painting’s shape that is evocative of our built and natural environment. Paper is used because it can be cut and modified with ease allowing me to experiment freely. Later, this can be permanently mounted on wood or canvas. I strive for balance, simplicity and clarity.
